I don't know if others realize that principle or have had the same problems. I suspect some do; maybe some.

They calculate failure rates in engineering by multiplying the failure rate of one component by the failure rate of the second component by the failure rate of the third and so on. Whatever you get is the failure rate for the contraption itself. So a human being is a contraption. Johnson, Jerry Johnson, was a contraption. There were so many multiplications that Jerry Johnson ended up becoming lost, ended up drowning in the sorrow of the arithmetic.

That's when Jerry Johnson decided to become a private eye.
